Assistant Cider Maker

Are you interested in the growing hard cider industry? We are seeking a hard-working person to join our growing production team!

The Assistant Cider Maker (ACM) is responsible for assisting in the production and output of great sweet cider, hard cider and related products! The ACM is responsible for the duties involved with the fermentation area and all items from the pressroom to packaging. The quality of our products can be greatly affected by the cellar processes; ensuring quality must be the primary focus to ensure the quality and integrity of our products.

The ACM is responsible for cleaning and sanitizing tanks and other equipment, ensuring the product is transferred slowly and in an aseptic manner from tank to tank, monitoring the fermentation, the cooling and conditioning, and carbonating to the correct level. Other duties of the ACM include cleaning the pressroom, floors, and outsides of tanks, miscellaneous parts, floor drains, filtration equipment, storage racks, and containers. No job is too big or too small for the ACM to complete.

Showalter’s Orchard is a family owned and operated farm that has been in business and serving the local and regional community since 1965. Since Showalter’s Orchard’s beginnings, it has grown into one of the area’s largest cider mills pressing over 40,000 gallons of cider a year and having visitors reach in excess of 50,000 each year. Aside from our farming and sweet cider production operation, Showalter’s Orchard has diversified its business to offer a hard cider company, Old Hill, which has quickly become a local and regional favorite.

The ideal candidate for this position will:
Have a primary focus to safely make sweet and hard cider and provide a safe working environment which allows us to work cleanly and produce great products in an environment with minimal stress
Communicate with the Production Team, including the Head Cidermaker, throughout the day to keep the day organized, running on time, and able to maintain a good workflow
Learn to make our core line of ciders from fermentation through packaging
Gain a full understanding of all Cidery Equipment
Assist in executing all fermentation, bottling and production processes
Provide daily tank management
Maintain tank & batch records, transferring, racking, cleaning through diligent record keeping
Run vitals on all fermenting and finished products to ensure stability and consistent quality
Operating CIP system
Package all formats of products (kegs, bottles, etc.)
Perform, request and assist with maintenance of: equipment, buildings,
Press raw cider juice
Help perform lab tests of juice, fermented ciders, final products and during production as needed to maintain quality
Maintain an orderly cider house and inventory of cider
Complete special projects assigned by supervisors
Able to work through challenges by setting a professional and upbeat example
Formulate new and exciting ciders for Old Hill Cider

High school diploma or equivalent
Experience following and improving processes
Mechanical aptitude and experience
Able to stand for up to 10 hours a day including frequent bending, stooping, pushing, lifting, kneeling and reaching
Able to lift and move 50 pounds.
Ability to effectively communicate, in English, both verbally and in writing
Writing and math skills necessary to accurately complete a dilution calculations, volume, flow, density, weight, length, pressure and other unit conversions, and alcohol content
Preferred: Operate a forklift safely
Preferred: Excellent knowledge of the industry and trends impacting the business.
Preferred: Experience in Brewery, Cidery or Winery

Retail Sales Associate

Duties include providing excellent customer service by greeting and waiting on walk-in customers, giving hard cider tastings, educating customers on our history, produce growing and cider making methods, provide ideas for using our apples and cider,  stocking (lifting and carrying boxes), cashiering, and maintaining an exceptionally clean facility. Must be accurate, customer-oriented and self-starting. The candidate must absolutely identify, anticipate, communicate and resolve problems.

The working environment can be hot and humid and cold during the fall season.  You will be on your feet all day! You must be available weekdays, weekends and some evenings. Customer service/retail experience preferred.

The employee will be required to complete all other duties as assigned including event planning and preparation and greenhouse tasks as needed.

The level of experience determines wages.

Farm Operations Worker

Duties include but are not limited to:

Apple sorting, grading and packing, executing cider mill operations,  cleaning and sanitizing the mill and tanks, cider bottling,  and record keeping.

The candidate must be able to lift at least 50 pounds repeatedly. The candidate must be able to identify, anticipate and resolve problems. The candidate must be self-starting, hard working, and enthusiastic about outdoor work. Working conditions can be hot and humid or cold and wet.  Forklift and Tractor driving skills are helpful.

The employee will be required to complete all other duties as assigned including event planning and preparation and greenhouse tasks as needed.

Donut and Cider Slushie Maker

Duties include but are not limited to: mixing batter, packaging, selling donuts and slushies, and cleaning the donut machine daily. Keeping inventory of supplies and reporting to management when supplies need replenishing. Hours include weekdays and Saturdays throughout the fall season and some evenings.

The employee will be required to complete all other duties as assigned including event planning and preparation and greenhouse tasks as needed.
